RoHS Compliance

RoHS 1 was superseded by the RoHS 2 directive. There are 2 major impacts on the industry. Control and Monitoring Instruments are pulled in but the RoHS 2 Directive as of July 22, 2017.

• Key point – In order to CE mark your Control and Monitoring Equipment as of this date, they MUST be RoHS compliant!!
• What is RoHS and WEEE? RoHS – Prevents bad materials
  • Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2002/95/EC repealed by 2011/65/EC)
  • “RoHS Directive” is an EU environmental directive which aims to restrict the use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE)
• What defines that Equipment needs to be RoHS compliant. – It can be as simple as one wire, circuit board. As we add features and make things “Smarter” or more “Features”. It can bring previously Mechanical only equipment need a RoHS evaluation.
• RoHS Compliance can effect future import and export of products related to the EU (European Union)

As of July 2017, in order to “CE” mark a piece of equipment to sell into the EU, your Industrial equipment MUST BE RoHS.

• This effects import and export from the EU and will start applying to legacy equipment.
• LARGE companies know how much time it may take to evaluate a large fleet – 10,000s or parts resulting into many man years of work.
• Evaluating and documenting early can improve import and export of equipment long term.
• Early RoHS compliance of Industrial equipment can be sold as a marketing advantage over a non RoHS competitor.
• If you start your RoHS evaluation close to the “Deadline”, you can find yourself spending much more to expedite later, or missing their deadline all together causing missed sales due to non-compliance blocking import into the EU.
